Athletic training program coming to Port Colborne’s Vale Centre

For elite athletes who are grappling with the balancing act between academic life and sports, a new program launching this spring at the Vale Centre aims to juggle both.

The TPH Academy started in London as a home for hockey players who want to play at the highest levels without losing focus of their student needs. The program has expanded to 15 other cities since 2010 and now welcomes students from other sports, though hockey remains the primary focus (TPH stands for Total Package Hockey).

The latest city to house a TPH Academy program is Port Colborne, which announced a partnership this week, which would see TPH Academy set up shop inside the Vale Centre.

“The heart of TPH Academy’s purpose is to advance, in and beyond the game, the next generation of impact players,” said TPH Academy CEO Alan Keeso. “We are looking forward to welcoming student-athletes and families of the Niagara region to experience this unique environment we’ve created, where student-athletes can grow together in and out of the classroom, all while working towards their academic and athletic goals.”

A number of high-profile hockey players have gone through the TPH Academy, including NHL captains Nick Suzuki, Bo Horvat, and Boone Jenner. Playing sports at the elite level eats up a large chunk of students’ time, so the academic side of the program is designed to be flexible and can be completed through a laptop during downtime or while on the bus for travel between arenas.

“We’re extremely grateful to Bryan Theal, manager of recreation for the City of Port Colborne, and the City of Port Colborne for opening their doors and inviting TPH Academy to the Niagara region,” said Keeso. “We are excited to meet prospective student-athletes and their families, and we couldn’t be more honoured to be welcomed into the Niagara community.”

TPH Academy Niagara will host a live virtual informational session on Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m. where parents will have the opportunity to learn more about TPH Academy’s blended academic, athletic and mentorship process personally.
