DETROIT – In another primetime matchup, the Detroit Tigers get set to take on the San Diego Padres on Saturday night, the second game of their three-game weekend series.

A slow start on Friday night did not help the Tigers start the weekend on the right foot. Home runs in the first and third innings from Juan Soto helped push the Padres to a 5-0 lead early on in the contest. Detroit did try to come back later in the game, as homers from Zach McKinstry and Riley Greene cut the lead to one, but they came up short, falling 5-4.

It was a rough start for the rookie Reese Olson, who gave up each run San Diego scored, despite striking out five in five frames. The loss hurts the Bengals in the race for first in the American League Central, as they are now six games back of the Minnesota Twins coming into Saturday.

The win marks three in the last four for the Friars, as they are trying to stay in the hunt in the National League Wild Card race. The big guns, particularly Soto and Manny Machado have come up clutch lately for San Diego, the reason why they are 5.5 games back of the third WC spot in the league. They currently sit fourth in the NL West, 10 games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Tigers are at risk of losing their first series since the All-Star Break.

PROBABLE STARTERS

  • DET: Matt Manning (3-1, 3.38 ERA)
  • SDP: TBD
