MLB insider predicts a Yankees trade before spring training

The New York Yankees are all over the MLB hot stove, thanks to an abundance of rumors regarding the future of Pittsburgh Pirates All-Star outfielder Bryan Reynolds.

But left field isn’t the only hole needing plugging by the Yankees, and with the free-agent market drying up, general manager Brian Cashman might have no choice but to make a trade.

ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez believes Cashman will move Gleyber Torres before the winter is over.

DJ LeMahieu can easily replace Torres at second base, and the New York Yankees have a glut of other middle infielders in incumbent shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa and three talented young players — Oswald Peraza, Anthony Volpe and Oswaldo Cabrera. Torres, who has two years of control remaining, has tailed off offensively in recent years and might benefit from a change of scenery.

Last week, The Athletic’s Jim Bowden reported the Chicago White Sox are shopping for a second baseman and mentioned Torres as a possible trade target.

With Volpe and Peraza knocking on the door, the writing could be on the wall for the 26-year-old Torres, who enjoyed a bounce-back season in 2022, hitting .257 with 24 home runs.

And keep in mind that Torres is a two-time All-Star who’s under team control for two more seasons. He’s scheduled to be a free agent after the 2024 campaign.
