Best NBA Clutch Player of the Year odds

The favourite: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (+200)

Gilgeous-Alexander has built a reputation as a clutch finisher this season with a few notable shots at the buzzer.

It will be interesting to see how far that reputation takes Gilgeous-Alexander because his statistical case isn’t clear-cut.

The Canadian’s clutch numbers — statistics from the final five minutes of games with a point differential of five or less — are strong, but not overwhelming.

His 92 clutch points are second in the NBA, but his 43.2 points per 100 possessions rank ninth. He’s also 14th in fourth-quarter points (190) and his clutch efficiency is middling as his field-goal percentage sits at 41.7.

If the voters give this award to the player they remember hitting the most late shots, Gilgeous-Alexander is a likely candidate to win, but more analytically-inclined votes may look elsewhere.

Other NBA Clutch Player of the Year choices

Best value: DeMar DeRozan (+350)

DeRozan is known as one of the NBA’s top high-leverage shotmakers, and he likely would’ve won this award last season if it existed.

The state of the reeling Chicago Bulls doesn’t help DeRozan’s chances, but his name is all over the clutch leaderboards.

His 97 clutch points are tops in the league, his 50.5 points per 100 possessions are second and his 238 fourth-quarter points rank third. Helping DeRozan’s case is that he isn’t just prolific in the clutch he’s also efficient.

With the game on the line, he’s hit a solid 46.8% of his shots and drained 92.9% of his free throws.

Player to watch: De’Aaron Fox (+6,000)

Fox is a way down the board, but as voters deep dive into the clutch stats they may be surprised by what they see from the Sacramento Kings star.

The lightning-quick guard leads the league in points (53.3) and field-goal attempts (37.8) per 100 possessions in clutch situations. If he can continue to thrive in those spots and make a highlight reel buzzer-beat or two, Fox’s odds could shorten in a hurry.

To his credit, he already has one brilliant OT winner with time expiring.
