Rep. Trahan On The Record about bridge funding, NCAA reform

MASSACHUSETTS CONGRESSWOMAN LORI TRAHAN. THANKS AGAIN FOR BEING WITH US. SO YOU RECENTLY SECURED $21 MILLION IN FUNDING FOR FOUR BRIDGES IN THE LOWELL AREA. WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR THAT CITY? I MEAN, EVERY TIME I GO UP TO LOWELL, THERE’S A TON OF CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY, WHICH IS A GREAT THING BECAUSE THAT MONEY WE WANT THAT MONEY TO GET OUT THE DOOR FROM THE INFRASTRUCTURE LAW AND INTO THE HANDS OF COMMUNITIES LIKE LOWELL. IT’S EVERYTHING, RIGHT? THIS IS ABOUT MAKING OUR STREETS SAFER FOR PEOPLE TO GO TO WORK, BRING THEIR KIDS TO SCHOOL, ETCETERA. AND LOWELL, THESE ARE BRIDGES THAT NEED TO BE REPAIRED. I WILL SAY I HAVE THE HONOR OF WORKING ON THE REGIONAL LEADERSHIP COUNCIL WITH THE WHITE HOUSE TO ACCELERATE THESE INVESTMENTS IN TERMS OF GETTING THEM TO COMMUNITIES. AND IN MASSACHUSETTS, MY OUR HOPE, THE WHOLE DELEGATION HOPE IS TO MAKE THAT $9 MILLION INVESTMENT GROW TO $12 MILLION TO 15 BILLION TO $20 BILLION THROUGH ALL THE COMPETITIVE GRANT PROCESSES. AND SO THAT’S WHAT THIS THAT’S WHAT THIS RESEMBLES. IT’S CERTAINLY GOOD POLITICS. DO YOU THINK ENOUGH OF THESE PROJECTS WILL ACTUALLY BE UNDERWAY IN THE NEXT YEAR TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE POLITICALLY? I DO. YOU KNOW, I WATCHED THE ADMINISTRATION UP CLOSE AND CERTAINLY PUSH ON THEM TO GET THESE FUNDS OUT THE DOOR QUICKLY. BUT WE’RE SEEING A LOT OF PROJECTS. WE’RE SEEING WE’RE SEEING A LOT OF CONSTRUCTION AS EVERYONE IN MASSACHUSETTS KNOWS, IN COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE COMMONWEALTH. AND I THINK IT’S REALLY GOING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. PEOPLE ARE GOING TO START SEEING HOW THAT IS TRANSFORMING THEIR OWN COMMUNITY, THEIR OWN QUALITY OF LIFE AS THEY SPEND LESS TIME IN THE CAR IN TRAFFIC. ALL RIGHT. I WANT TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT ABOUT VOLLEYBALL. SO THIS IS YOUR FAVORITE TOPIC. YOU WERE A SCHOLARSHIP ATHLETE AT GEORGETOWN VOLLEYBALL BACK THEN. THERE WAS NO OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO MAKE MONEY. NOW, WITH NIL THE NAME IMAGE LICENSE THAT ALL CHANGES DRAMATICALLY. WHAT MORE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN? WELL, I THINK RIGHT NOW WE HAVE A PATCHWORK OF STATE LAWS AROUND NIL. AND YOU ARE RIGHT TO POINT OUT BACK WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE, I COULDN’T COACH A VOLLEYBALL CAMP BECAUSE IT WOULD HAVE JEOPARDIZED MY AMATEUR STATUS. SO THERE’S NO QUESTION THAT IT’S BETTER FOR ATHLETES TODAY THAN IT WAS WHEN I WAS IN PLAYING. BUT WE CAN DO MORE TO HAVE A NATIONAL STANDARD, RIGHT, SO THAT YOUNG ATHLETES AND I’M A FIRST GENERATION GRADUATE OF COLLEGE, RIGHT? SO THERE’S A LOT OF ATHLETES WHO ARE JUST LIKE ME VENTURING INTO ONE OF THE BIGGEST OR AGREEMENTS THAT THEY’RE GOING TO MAKE IN TERMS OF A SCHOLARSHIP AND MAKING SURE THAT WE WE STANDARDIZE THAT PROCESS ACROSS ALL STATES SO THAT THEY HAVE ACCESS TO THE BENEFITS OF THEIR NAME, IMAGE AND LIKENESS, FEDERAL STANDARD. BUT AGAIN, IT’S A PATCHWORK RIGHT NOW AND IT’S A BIG JOB FOR THE FORMER GOVERNOR, CHARLIE BAKER, RIGHT. HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING WITH HIM ON THIS? I HAVE. YOU KNOW, I’VE BEEN I’VE BEEN PRETTY. CRITICAL OF THE NCAA AND HAPPY THAT GOVERNOR BAKER TOOK OVER. HE HAS DONE ALL THE RIGHT THINGS. HE’S DOWN ON CAPITOL HILL REGULARLY MEETING WITH FOLKS, TALKING ABOUT HIS PRIORITIES AROUND TRANSPARENCY, MAKING SURE WE HAVE EQUITY. THAT’S A BIG IMPORTANT TOPIC FOR ME, MAKING SURE WOMEN GET TO BENEFIT FROM NIL. AND I’M YOU KNOW, WE’RE IN CLOSE CONVERSATIONS TO SEE IF LEGISLATIVELY WE CAN DO SOMETHING THAT MAKES IT.
