Sacred Heart women’s basketball coach Jessica Mannetti helped lead the Pioneers to their first NCAA tournament berth since 2012 with a 72-60 win over FDU Sunday in the NEC championship game.
The Sacred Heart women’s basketball team is returning to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2012 after defeating top-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson 72-60 Sunday in the Northeast Conference tournament championship game in Teaneck, N.J.
Sacred Heart, the second seed in the tournament, overcame a one-point deficit entering the fourth quarter to earn its fourth NCAA tournament berth. The Pioneers will learn their opponent Sunday night during the NCAA’s selection show at 8 p.m. (ESPN).
Freshman guard Ny’Ceara Pryor led Sacred Heart with 20 points on 10-for-20 shooting. Senior guard Olivia Tucker scored 16 points and freshman guard Sierra Johnson added 12 for the Pioneers, who were making their first NEC championship game appearance since 2016.
Pryor became the first player in NEC history to be named Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the same season.
Amelia Wood had 11 and four steals as the visitors improved to 18-13 overall.
Sacred Heart shot 50 percent from the floor and outrebounded FDU 41-29.
Sacred Heart trailed 56-55 with 3:35 left before ending the game on a 17-4 run.
